Review

Every time you use your computer, even when it's brand new, the files on your PC or laptop will continuously become fragmented. This means that these files are split into millions of pieces, and this occurs even more so when you go to add, modify and delete them. So when you go to access a file - even just to read it - it will take much longer than necessary because Windows has to first find each piece of the file before you can even see it. This makes using your computer, and doing everything you want, much slower than it should be.
UltimateDefrag 2008 is a proactive and effective Windows defragmentation software. The advanced technology of UltimateDefrag guarantees maximum system performance not just in the moments after the defragmentation has just finished, but also thereafter. In doing so, UltimateDefrag neither interferes with your work, due to excessive use of your systems resources, nor does its configuration, installation and maintenance.
UltimateDefrag 2008 is easier to use than the standard system maintenance tools because all important functions are grouped together in one application, allowing the user to select those operations which are best suited to the moment. UltimateDefrag 2008 also supports scheduling, allowing tasks to be completed without user intervention during times when you will not be using your PC.
UltimateDefrag 2008 utility is designed to transform maintaining your system into a much faster and easier task.

Limitations: 14 days trial.

Theoretically this could be a wonderful program, giving you great control over the optimization process. However, a whole variety of its default settings were idiotic and would have helped to de-optimize any disk.

So, thankful to have noticed that and not just gone ahead with a defrag on default settings, I changed the settings for an Auto defrag to be at least reasonably powerful in optimizing my C drive containing Win Vista and a lot of application and utility software.

The result? Nearly all the files that could be moved, including virtually all those which were coloured to indicate their being fully defragmented, were moved to the *innermost* tracks, and a fair number which had been placed in middle tracks, I suppose by Windows, were left there. Then the defrag hung at 50%, when it was claiming to have started a 'consolidation' defragmentation. I stopped that defrag, and then out of curiosity ran it again. This time, some of what had been moved to the innermost tracks was moved to the middle tracks, but nothing to the outside tracks. And then 'Ultimate' Defrag went into 'consolidation defragmentation' and it became clear that again it had more or less ceased functioning. That time, when I clicked on Stop, the program hung on 'Stopping', and eventually I had to exit it and risk some disk corruption.

If Ultimate Defrag worked properly and did exactly what is claimed of it I would welcome it with open arms and kick Diskeeper off my system, for it doesn't put least-used files on the innermost tracks, where they really need to be for best performance. But at least Diskeeper is reliable and puts everything that it can move at all reasonably up-front, which is much better than Ultimate Defrag moving what it could to inner (lower performance) tracks.
